Unfortunately, the math on smaller + lighter does not equal less recoil. The 20-gauge gun still pushes close to the same payload at about the same muzzle velocity as a 12-gauge. With the gun being lighter to boot, it ends up pretty much even in terms of recoil. Factor in that there are some really light, incredibly low recoil 12-gauge loads that don’t exist in 20-gauge, and the 12-gauge still ends up being the better choice for the recoil adverse.

Ballistic tests show that the small birdshot pellets lack the ability to penetrate to a sufficient depth against human attackers. The AR-15 family of rifles is another favorite, but these involve interior, and occasionally exterior, wall overpenetration. Even with their stocks fully collapsed, carbines still exceed the new non-NFA shotguns’ length by about 7 inches. Length is important if defenders leave the safe room. Longer firearms increase the potential for entanglement, telegraph position to the bad guys and are easier to take from inexperienced users. Granted, you should choose which firearms you want for your personal protection.
If you're okay with increasing the shot size but losing almost 50fps you can choose the #8 shotshells for a harder-hitting load for larger upland game birds. Because of the increased lethal range of TSS, many turkey hunters are downsizing their shotguns. 20 gauges and 410s are becoming more sought-after by turkey hunters because a 12ga is no longer needed to harvest a mature Tom ethically.
#1 Buckshot
In double trigger configurations the forward trigger fires the right barrel on a SxS, the lower barrel on a U/O. Semis can be a little more finicky than pump actions, as the shells must provide enough oomph to power the action, which requires well thought-out design. Luckily the design has been in use for more than a century, so today’s systems are much more accommodating than initial designs. The forward stroke elevates the shell via a carrier, which gets chambered into the barrel by the bolt face.
Shotguns must be seen as the ultimate home defense option. To ensure you have the ability to use one effectively, this also means regular target practice is a must. It's capable of hitting vital organs and quickly downing an attacker, while limiting the chances of overpenetrating through your target.

This is one shotshell than can be used in a handgun or shotgun. In close quarters it's tough to beat for self-defense. Be prepared for sticker shock with Remington Premier TSS because it's expensive. However, it offers a solid muzzle velocity of 1,100 FPS of 1.5 ounces of #7 shot.
Few pellets of any size will penetrate brick or high-quality rock walls. (Studs used in drywall construction can also deflect or stop projectiles.) Of course, not every home features a brick or stone exterior. And even homes that do also have windows and doors, which are potential escape routes for any errant bullets.

Beyond the craftsmanship of the walnut stock and absurdly beautiful Giovanelli-engraved receiver, the Ethos is a beast of a gun. The Inertia Driven System gives you quick, trouble free loading and Benelli introduced a spin on their ComforTech system for recoil management. I'd recommend a rifle, like an AR-15, as a better alternative for those worried about recoil. The one potential issue with #4 buck is that it tends to be on the low end of the FBI's recommended penetration depths. If you can't find the perfect home-defense round, you might try crafting your own by handloading. I'm typically tight-fisted with my money; however, when protecting my family and myself, I'm willing to spend more to ensure I buy a high-quality product.
So much so that the 1-ounce Hydra-Shok design far exceeds FBI standard test requirements. Whether you are having target practice sessions, going through skeet, trap, or sporting clay exercises, it will not disappoint. This economically priced steel shot round certainly offers reliability and shot consistency. Any sports shooter looking to hit their target effectively or increase their trap success will not be disappointed. Before getting into two excellent birdshot loads, I should just mention that it is possible to get more densely packed loads.
The FliteControl wad is unlike traditional wads because it acts similarly to a sabot for a slug. The FliteControl wad holds the pattern tighter for longer distances, which increases the rounds effective range. For defensive work, I want a fairly tight, even pattern. Tight patterns mean fewer pellets missing attackers and running wild. If the battle goes outside, a tight pattern adds more distance to the Shockwave’s effectiveness.
Buckshot is our preferred type of shotgun ammo for home defense and what seems to be most popular for this purpose. Once you understand the differences between the shotgun ammo types, choosing a self-defense shotshell becomes much more manageable. However, much depends on the shotshells you load into your gun for personal defense. Various projectiles and brands have different ballistics.
I’ve had to ring steel at 120-yards for some competitions and although it’s hard…it’s doable with slugs. Pump actions are known to eat pretty much anything you feed them, making them staple law enforcement and military firearms. While #1 Buck is my preferred home defense ammo, it can sometimes be hard to find in stock.
